What is Myofascial Release?

The John F. Barnes, PT method of Myofascial Release (MFR) is a safe and effective hands-on approach to reduce and eliminate fascial restrictions that cause pain, tightness, and postural issues.

Unlike muscle which responds well to firm stretches held for around a minute, MFR uses gentle sustained pressure to effect changes in the fascial system. A hold of 5 minutes is essential to allowing the elastic and connective tissue to soften and begin to release.

Treatment of fascia requires a whole body approach and often you may be treated in areas that you think are not related to your condition. For example, low back pain can occur due to ankle stability issues, previous injuries, knee/hip pathology, or postural holding patterns.

MFR is a gentle but profound technique and you may not feel like anything has happened following your first treatment. However, you may begin to experience effects of treatment up to a day or two following treatment. Some of the effects may be increased pain followed by improvement, pain in new areas, lightheadedness, nausea, and even emotional changes. All of these are normal responses to the release of fascial restrictions. At Waterfront Wellness we recommend increasing your fluid intake during treatment to minimize lightheadedness and nausea from the release of metabolic waste products as your tissue softens.
